Injury roundup: Doug Martin leg injury deemed minor

Doug Martin wasn't on the field in crunch time for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Sunday's loss to the Carolina Panthers. Bucs coach Lovie Smith explained Tuesday that Martin's absence wasn't because of a leg injury suffered earlier in the game.

The evolution of the NFL:
Take a look at how the NFL has evolved from its humble roots, and the efforts being made to ensure it continues to grow.

"Doug did go down with a little minor injury there, so we had to make a change, and from there he was able to come back and he was ready to go," Smith said Tuesday on WDAE-AM (via "Bobby (Rainey) had come and had given us a little bit of life, and as I've mentioned we want to play more than one running back throughout. So it was just a perfect time to keep both of them involved."

The good news is that Martin is physically fine -- or close to it -- a welcome development after the running back's 2013 season was cut short by a shoulder injury. But Rainey's presence down the stretch is a development worth keeping tabs on. Martin had 9 yards on nine carries before his exit.

Here are some other injury updates from around the NFL:

» Arizona Cardinals linebacker John Abraham is going through the concussion protocol. Running back Andre Ellington has his injured foot in a boot in an effort to get the foot "calmed down," Ellington will attempt to practice this week.

» The Redskins have placed defensive tackle Barry Cofield (ankle) on IR-designated for return. Cofield cannot practice for six weeks and can't return to game action for eight weeks.

» Tennessee Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt said Tuesday that linebacker Zach Brown will miss the rest of the season with a torn pectoral muscle. Brown was injured in the team's 26-10 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

» Detroit Lions slot corner Bill Bentley tore his ACL and is done for the season.

» The Eagles initially hoped the high-ankle sprain suffered by tackle Allen Barbre would cost him a few weeks, but ESPN's Adam Caplan reported Tuesday that Barbre is expected to undergo surgery. Philadelphia later announced Tuesday afternoon they have placed Barbre and linebacker Najee Goode (torn pectoral muscle) on injured reserve, ending their seasons. The Eagles also announced they placed offensive lineman Evan Mathis (knee) on IR-designated for return.

» The Cleveland Browns signed tight end Gerell Robinson off the Denver Broncos' practice squad. Count this as a sign that Jordan Cameron's shoulder injury could keep him out of Week 2.
